Threads of Connection

The Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History is teaming up with the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce, Danville Parks and Rec., the River District Association, the Dan River Basin Association, Goodwill Industries of the Valley, Averett University and Sovah Health - Danville, as well as many other civic organizations, on one of the largest and most ambitious community knit projects in the region.

This fiber, knitting & crocheting collaboration by the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History, recognizes the building of community found within the age-old practice of gathering to assemble fabric and knitted pieces in small groups. This interactive winter community project, produced from January through June, celebrates and reflects people’s many different backgrounds and experiences. Participants are invited to collaborate in the making of a "Yarn Bombing" installation along the Danville Riverwalk, and share their COVID19 stories.

Visitors participating from home are invited to create their own assembled yarn covering, using materials you have on hand – T-shirt fabric, thread, and recycled sweaters! Knitted, crocheted and constructed fabric contributions will be added to our "WANDERLOVE: A Stitch in Time" Yarn Bomb installation in the summer months of July 4 – September 26, 2021 creating an assembled reflection of the community in bright, joyful colors.

While yarn installations – called yarn bombs or yarnstorms – may last for years, they are considered non-permanent, and, unlike other forms of graffiti, can be easily removed if necessary. Nonetheless, the practice is still illegal and participants of a yarn bombing need Danville CITY PERMITS. The DMFAH will be working with the city to obtain specific permits for the Riverwalk in July. The WANDERLOVE exhibition will go up in July and come down in September.
