About the Instructor: CLARA I GUTIÉRREZ
Clara was born in Colombia. Since she was a girl, her passion was drawing and painting. She studied Graphic Design and Art in Bogota. Over the years she took several courses and workshops with renowned Colombian artists. She defined her technique in oil and acrylic on canvas, as well as mixed media and collage. Her themes are diverse including exotic flowers, bamboo, leaves, still life and landscapes.
Clara has had over ten exhibitions in Colombia. In 2002, she moved from Colombia to Dallas, TX where she lived until 2009. During this time she became a member of TVAA (Texas Visual Art Association). She participated in over 30 juried exhibitions at Bath House Cultural Center, TVAA Gallery, Meyerson Symphony Center - Hispanic Festival, Irving Art Center, The Goodrich Gallery and many others. In 2007 she was selected as one of the One Hundred Best Texas Artists by the Hunting Art Prize in Houston, TX. In 2008 she was the featured Artist for Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas in the Fort Worth Chapter with the work “The Monarch Journey” as part of the “Celebrate Latina Art,” an auction to help Latinas attend college. In 2010 she was selected to attend the First Colombian Art Biennale in Brussels, Belgium. During 2014-2016 Clara worked at La Esquina Galería in Bogotá, Colombia, as general and public relations manager and curator.
Since 2016 she has been living in the US in Danville, VA.
Member of DAL (Danville Art League) with exhibitions between 2016 - 2020. In 2020 she participated in the International Luxembourg Art Prize.
Artist's Statement
Landscapes, plants, exotic flowers, leaves, fruits; the strength of the colors and the sharpness of the shapes under the tropic's light in my native Colombia have been my constant theme and challenge.
Now, living in the United States, I have found new challenges because of the diversity of seasonal plants, the unique stunning colors of fall, the peacefulness of winter...every day is an observation process to capture the perfection of nature.
